Watch the Video: Combining STEM Experiences with University Life
Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR has partnered with the Choctaw Nation's Jones Academy STEM camp to provide hands-on STEM experiences for Native American high school students. The program, established three years ago, has continued to grow and evolve since its inception.
In July 2016 EPSCoR provided campers with their first overnight university experience. Students traveled to the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater, where they lived in dorms and experienced STEM and university life first-hand.
Campers flew drones and learned about the advanced equipment's applications for agricultural science and the environment. They investigated water quality and the impact on aquatic life in a local creek and explored the science of hydraulic engineering at a USDA lab. Students toured the OSU campus, participated in a Cowboy Scavenger Hunt, and reflected nightly on their experiences during group time in the dorms.
