OK EPSCoR Annual State Conference

Thursday, April 21, 2011 - 8:00am - 5:00pm

Researchers from across the state will gather to highlight Oklahoma’s bioenergy research efforts during the OK EPSCoR Annual State Conference on Thursday, April 21, 2011.  The event will be held at the Thurman J. White Forum on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman.

Scheduled presenters include Michael Ming, Oklahoma secretary of energy; Quang A. Nguyen, program manager, Abengoa Bioenergy New Technologies; Steven McKeever, Oklahoma secretary of science and technology; and Chancellor Glen D. Johnson.  Breakout sessions, hosted by OK EPSCoR researchers, will engage participants through scientific presentations and discussions that address ongoing Biofuels research, as well as current state and national trends in the field of bioenergy.

A scientific poster session and hybrid poster/oral presentation contest will spotlight research progress in the alternative energy field.  Please note: The hybrid poster/oral presentation contest is for undergraduate and graduate students only.  However, the scientific poster session is open to all participants.

Bioenergy investigators from Oklahoma and nearby states, EPSCoR external advisory board members and program officers from federal granting agencies are invited to attend the event, which is hosted by Oklahoma EPSCoR, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and the National Science Foundation.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required, via the link below.  Registration deadline is April 14.  See below for other pertinent registration and submission deadlines.

Undergraduate and graduate students who are performing research that is funded under the current OK EPSCoR RII award are invited to participate in a hybrid poster/ oral presentation competition that will be held during the Annual State Conference.  The competition is divided into three categories, based on the EPSCoR RII Award's bioenergy research areas:  feedstock development, microbial conversion and chemical conversion.  A maximum of 15 students will be accepted for each category.

The competition begins at 1:30 p.m. on April 21st with oral presentations.  Each participant will be given a maximum of three minutes to provide a clear and engaging overview of their poster.  The 3-minute presentation should be supported by a maximum of five PowerPoint slides.  A PowerPoint template, which must be followed explicitly, will be provided to participants via email after they have submitted their abstracts and abstract forms to Gina Miller at [email protected].  All participants must use the provided template and are not to exceed the 5-slide limit; animation is not allowed.  Any variance from these guidelines will disqualify the participant.  The final aspect of the competition is a judged, scientific poster session.  Maximum poster dimensions: 40" x 36".  Larger posters will not be accepted.

First and second place winners from each of the three categories will be awarded distinguished plaques.  First place winners will receive travel funding to attend the 2011 NSF EPSCoR National Conference on October 24-27 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where they will present their winning posters.  Students must participate in both the oral presentation and poster session to qualify for an award.
